Hij blonk uit in onmogelijkheid. De Nederlander Maurits Cornelius Escher (1898-1972) staat niet bekend als een kunstenaar die naar de realiteit tekende. Trappen die omhoog lopen maar tegelijkertijd ook omlaag, handen die zichzelf tekenen, holle vormen die ook bol blijken te zijn - prenten waarvan je hersenen dol draaien als je er lang naar kijkt.
Onmogelijk? Er zit meer werkelijkheid in die onmogelijkheid dan we tot nu toe dachten. Nee, de oneindige trappenhuizen bestaan niet echt. Maar totale verzinsels van het ‘wiskundige genie’ - dat waren het nu ook weer niet.

The winners of the 24th annual National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest have been announced, with a group of ten photos coming out on top, plus one Viewer's Choice winner. These eleven images were chosen from more than 12,000 entries submitted by 6,615 photographers from 152 countries. Here first the 11 winners, followed by a selection of myself.
